Fresh momentum for the WTO: MC10 Nairobi must deliver

Ahead of the 10th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), which will take place from 15 to 18 December 2015 in Nairobi (Kenya), Eurocommerce, European Services Forum (ESF) and the Foreign Trade Association (FTA) have gathered the support of 23 business associations worldwide to call upon the WTO to deliver on current and future challenges of international trade.

In a joint statement, this business alliance –representing a combined turnover close to 10 trillion euros- requested WTO members to ratify and implement the WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA), seal agreements on Information Technology (ITA) and Environmental Goods (EGA). The statement emphasises as well the need to deliver on matters still being negotiated within the Doha Development Agenda (DDA) and discuss a new set of issues and new negotiating dynamics with better prospects to reach agreement. FTA will be in Nairobi to follow the meetings and will also join the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) Trade and Development Symposium, where it will hold a session to examine the benefits of trade from the perspective of Kenya, the largest African flower producer.

For this session FTA Director General, Christian Ewert, will be joined by Mr Karl Brauner, Deputy Director-General of the World Trade Organization, along with Jane Ngige, the CEO of the Kenya Flower Council, to explore what kind of added-value the international trade of cut flowers generates for developing countries and the trade policy needed to unleash the potential of the horticultural industry.
