FTA Participates in Convention on International Labour Standards and the Indian Workplace

On 18 November, FTA took part in a one-day workshop at a convention on International Labour Standards and the Indian Workplace in the Global Supply Chains during the ‘India and Sustainability Standards: International Dialogues & Conference’ hosted by the Centre for Responsible Business in New Delhi, India.

Natasha Mehta Majumdar, FTA Representative India, served on a panel focusing on labour standards and the current issues from both a global and an Indian perspective. She introduced FTA and its trade policy and sustainability services: BSCI and the Business Environmental Performance Initiative (BEPI).

Ms. Mehta emphasised BSCI’s holistic approach towards social responsibility, which aims at the highest labour protection; fosters shared responsibility at all levels; assesses risks and builds on workers’ involvement. She concluded by highlighting the values that guide BSCI participants: continuous improvement, cooperation and empowerment.

The two workshops that followed involved active audience participation in the identification of vulnerable sectors, their challenges and the obstacles to improve labour standards in these sectors.
