FTA Participates in Roundtable with Sri Lankan Prime Minister in Brussels

On 20 October, FTA Director General Christian Ewert moderated a breakfast roundtable event led by the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, the Hon. Ranil Wickramasinghe. The event, entitled “Unlocking New Trade, Investment and Business Opportunities for Potential Partnerships with the Europe” was well attended by almost 50 stakeholders and a lively discussion was held between the panellists: Fred Vandermarliere of J Cortes Cigars, Peter Berz of the EU Commission’s Asia and Latin America Unit, Sagala Ratnayake the Sri Lankan Minister of Law & Order and Southern Development and MEP Nirj Deva.

Prior to his role as FTA Director General, Christian Ewert spent nine years in Sri Lanka as the head of a sports equipment company and so was well-versed in the politics and culture of the country. After the event, he had a fruitful conversation with Prime Minster Wickramasinghe reiterating FTA’s continued commitment to support Sri Lanka in its application for a reinstated GSP+ status.
