Gender considerations are crucial to the achievement of amfori’s vission and its mission to contribute to the SDGs.
Not only do more women than men live in poverty globally according to the World Bank, women are also often disproportionately represented at the lowest tiers of the supply chain and subject to the worst kinds of discrimination and abuses.
On the occasion of International Women’s Day, March 8 2020, amfori adopted a Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment strategy.
Its objective is to “Develop the tools and opportunities that effectively enable us to promote gender equality in supply chains and in the workplace so as to advance performance, sustainability and fairness.”
"Our mission cannot be realized without women's economic empowerment" Christian Ewert, amfori President
Empowering Women throughout the Supply Chain: From the C-Suite to the Factory Floor by supporting the UN’s Women Empowerment Principles
In signing the UN Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs), a company signals support of this agenda at the highest level. This includes a CEO commitment to foster business practices that empower women, such as gender-responsive supply chain practices, equal pay for work of equal value, and zero tolerance against sexual harassment in the workplace.
The ‘WEPs Activator’ is a 10-month journey bringing together a small group of companies to advance gender equality through interactive trainings, peer learning, and individual mentoring.
The pilot ran from September 2020 until June 2021.
To learn more about the outcomes of the WEPs Activator Pilot, you can watch the recording here.
The event also saw the launch of the programme’s second and enhanced edition. The WEPs Activator 2.0 will run from October 2021 until June 2022.
To find out more about the WEPs Activator 2.0 and how to engage, please have a look at the brochure. You can express your interest by filling in this form before 1 August. Places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Empowering Women in our Sourcing Countries through our Women’s Empowerment Programme
In order to tackle gender inequality in the supply chain of its members, amfori launched a Women’s Empowerment Programme in September 2018. The goal of the programme is to:
- raise awareness and understanding in companies of the persistent challenges that women face at work as well as on the business benefits of gender equality and women’s empowerment
- build management capacity to create a more enabling work environment for women through training
- increase career prospects for women by training them for positions beyond the factory level
The Women’s Empowerment Programme started off with three specific projects targetting producers in the three biggest sourcing countries – China, India and Bangladesh.
While all projects have been completed, the project deliverables, such as trainings, guidance documents and tools, can be accessed on the amfori website and amfori Academy by amfori BSCI participants:
- Gender equality self-assessment and action plan tool (English)
- Handbook on Social Dialogue on Gender Equality (English)
- Management and worker trainings on (i) Effective Communication and (ii) Gender Equality and Anti-Sexual Harassment (English and Bangla)
- Management trainings for producers on ‘Inclusiveness and Diversity: Women Empowerment’ (English and Chinese)
- Member and Producer Guidance on The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redress) (POSH) Act (English)
- Management training on POSH Act (English)
Based on our members’ needs, we will continue to explore enhancing our capacity building offering for business partners in the key sourcing countries of our members.
Developing Gender Responsive Tools and Standards through the UNECE Declaration on Gender Responsive Standards
In May 2019, amfori signed the UNECE Declaration of Gender Responsive Standards and Standards Development.
With the signing of this Declaration amfori commits to developing a gender lens on its amfori BSCI programme and reviewing tools such as its Country Due Diligence tool. In the most recent version of the amfori BSCI system manual (July 2018), gender responsiveness has been incorporated into our approach to build improvements into our Human Rights Due Diligence. We have also committed to ensuring that all our advocacy actions are gender responsive.
We are proud to have strengthened the amfori Stakeholder Advisory Council with dedicated gender experts, such as UN Women.
Unleash the power of Gender Equality in your company.
