Our commitment to gender

Gender considerations are crucial to the achievement of amfori’s mission and its mission to contribute to the SDGs.  

Not only do more women than men live in poverty globally according to the World Bank, women are also often disproportionately represented at the lowest tiers of the supply chain and subject to the worst kinds of discrimination and abuses.  

Our strategy 

 

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, March 8 2020, amfori adopted a Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment strategy.  

Its objective is to “Develop the tools and opportunities that effectively enable us to promote gender equality in supply chains and in the workplace so as to advance performance, sustainability and fairness.”

Empowering Women in our Sourcing Countries through our Women’s Empowerment Programme 

 

In order to tackle gender inequality in the supply chain of its members, amfori launched a Women’s Empowerment Programme in September 2018. The goal of the programme is to: 

  • raise awareness and understanding in companies of the persistent challenges that women face at work as well as on the business benefits of gender equality and women’s empowerment 
  • build management capacity to create a more enabling work environment for women through training 
  • increase career prospects for women by training them for positions beyond the factory level 

The Women’s Empowerment Programme currently embodies three specific projects targetting producers in the three biggest sourcing countries – China, India and Bangladesh.

Developing Gender Responsive Tools and Standards through the UNECE Declaration on Gender Responsive Standards 

 

In May 2019, amfori signed the UNECE Declaration of Gender Responsive Standards and Standards Development.  

With the signing of this Declaration amfori commits to developing a gender lens on its amfori BSCI programme and reviewing tools such as its Country Due Diligence tool. In the most recent version of the amfori BSCI system manual (July 2018), gender responsiveness has been incorporated into our approach to build improvements into our Human Rights Due Diligence. We have also committed to ensuring that all our advocacy actions are gender responsive. 

 

Empowering Women throughout the Supply Chain: From the C-Suite to the Factory Floor by supporting the UN’s Women Empowerment Principles 

 

In signing the UN Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs), a company signals support of this agenda at the highest level. This includes a commitment to foster business practices that empower women, such as gender-responsive supply chain practices, equal pay for work of equal value, and zero tolerance against sexual harassment in the workplace.  

Beyond signing these principles, amfori is partnering with UN Women and BSR to advance the uptake and implementation of the WEPs by businesses. We are strengthening our commitment to supporting businesses to champion women’s empowerment in global supply chains.
