Location: Online | Date: 13 July, 2021 | Time: 09:30 – 13:00 (Brussels Time)
On Tuesday 13 July, amfori will hold the third on-line session of this year’s Unleash Opportunity conference. EU Trade Policy: Enforcement and Improvement, will be held over two sessions running from 09:30 until 13:00 CET. It will focus on the EU’s new trade policy which promises ‘open strategic autonomy’ including closer scrutiny of partner countries’ adherence to bi-lateral agreements (in particular, the commitments to TSD chapters), and a review of the GSP regulation.
Session 1 | Enforcement of TSD chapters – 09:30-10:30 CEST
Since the EU-Singapore FTA, all EU agreements contain chapters that cover sustainable trade. Partner countries sign up to commitments that should improve the sustainability of trade and supply chains – a goal to which amfori is dedicated. In this session, we will hear how the Commission will enforce these commitments, and answer questions from participants.
- Denis Redonnet, Chief Enforcement Officer, DG TRADE, European Commission
Session 2 | Improvements to the GSP – 11:00-13:00 CET
The current GSP will expire on 31 December 2023 and the EU is already considering how its replacement will look. In this session, we will learn from the Commission how this process is progressing, hear how a top-level NGO would like it reformed, and discover how the US counterpart works. Participants will have the opportunity to question the panellists and give their own views on how the system can be improved.
- Alina Boiciuc, Dep. Head of Unit (Trade and Sustainable Dev), DG TRADE, European Commission
- Claudio Francavilla, EU Advocacy Officer, Human Rights Watch
- Erland Herfindahl, Senior Trade Representative for the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), USEU
