Human rights and environmental defenders play a key role in holding companies and states accountable for business-related human rights violations and environmental degradation. However, in many countries defenders are increasingly defamed, harassed and killed for protecting labour rights or criticising businesses related to powerful economic and political interests. The covid 19 pandemic poses new challenges to both businesses and defenders. At the same time, a new EU-legislation on mandatory human rights and environmental due diligence for companies is under way.
Key issues addressed in the webinar:
- How can companies address risks to defenders in their supply chains and prepare for growing expectations following a new law?
- What is needed to make the EU mHRDD legislation an effective tool?
- How could a legislation change how businesses engage with civil society and defenders?
