Action on Gender – Reflecting on 2020 and Planning for 2021

21-12-2020

On 16 December, the Presidency of the EU Council released its conclusion on the Gender Action Plan III 2021-2025 (GAP III), called ‘An ambitious agenda for gender equality and women's empowerment in EU external action’.

The presidency affirms its full support for gender equality as one of the key values for the European Union and urges all governmental bodies to collaborate in order to jointly achieve gender equality in external action by 2030.

amfori’s Actions

amfori welcomes the decision of the presidency to support GAP III, since we firmly believe that gender equality must be mainstreamed in all relevant policies, both at national and international level.

Gender equality represents one of the key areas of work for amfori, as outlined in our Enterprise For Equal - Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Strategy 2020-2022 and EU Policy Agenda 2024.

Garner Member Commitment in Partnership with UN Women

In 2020, amfori became a signatory of the UN Women Empowerment Principles and joined forces with UN Women to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment among businesses.

The launch of the WEPs Activator marks the first milestone of this partnership, as it is the first programme of its kind to support companies in implementing the Women’s Empowerment Principles, both in their own organisation and in global supply chains. The WEPs Activator aims to secure CEO buy-in for gender equality as a foundation for companies and their global supply chains. Its purpose is to drive change throughout the whole organisation, from boardrooms to the factory floor. It will target C-level leadership as well as divisions related to human resources, diversity and inclusion, corporate social responsibility, procurement and supply chain management, or those eager to help drive progress for women within their organisation.

Building Capacity Among amfori BSCI Producers

In parallel and with the aim of building capacity among amfori BSCI producers, amfori continued the roll-out of our Women Empowerment Programme. As part of this, we organised a series of online and face-to-face training sessions and social dialogues on gender equality in amfori’s key sourcing countries: Bangladesh, China and India.

Sharpening our Tools – Strengthening the Gender-Lens of amfori BSCI

Finally, amfori entered into a partnership with BSR to strengthen the gender lens of the amfori BSCI System, which marks a crucial development in making amfori and its tools more gender-responsive.

amfori will continue its efforts to enhance gender equality globally in 2021, in line with the Sustainable Development Goal 5. Keep an eye on our website to be updated about our gender-related initiatives.
