On 22 June 2018, the EU imposed additional duties of 10% and 25% on certain products originating in the USA. The EU also projected that duties of 10%, 25%, 35% and 50% would apply to other products as from 1 June 2021, or sooner if a WTO Dispute Settle Body ruled that US safeguard measures were inconsistent with the WTO at an earlier date, and until the US ceased to apply the safeguard measures.
On 17 May 2021, the Union and the United States published a Joint Statement where they both “agreed to chart a path that ends the WTO disputes following the U.S. application of tariffs on imports from the EU under section 232”.
As such, on 31 May the Commission decided to suspend the application of the additional duties until 30 November 2021.
