amfori – 2020: Year in Review



The year 2020 has been an unprecedented moment in time. It has had a significant impact on all your social, health and economic lives and the same goes for everybody at amfori. The events of the past 12 months have had profound effects on the way you do business and they will change the way your supply chains operate and will operate in the future.

While we still live through the pandemic, at amfori we are thinking about how to build back better for our recovery. A more sustainable rebuild should bring benefits for people, planet and prosperity.

From all of us at amfori, we would like to thank you for your commitment and dedication to our common mission of open and sustainable trade. Over the next 12 months, our priority is to deliver a better service to you and support you in achieving your sustainability goals. Below you have a review of some of the most important points of our year together:

  • 1. The COVID-19 Pandemic – at hand to support you

During the first wave in Europe, we worked to prepare the amfori COVID-19 Updates Hub, as well as develop guidelines such as Responsible Purchasing Practices to assist you in maintaining a sustainable outlook.

  • 2. amfori Sustainability Platform – a lot done, more to do

Over the course of the year, we have seen a great deal of our members migrated from the former amfori platform to the new amfori Sustainability Platform. While this is a complex task, which requires a significant amount of time and effort, especially from you our members, we are looking forward to completing the roll-out of the platform in 2021.

  • 3. Audit Assurance Programme – trust is essential

High quality audits are key for responsible due diligence and continuous improvement. We have prepared a more efficient approach to be implemented as of 2021 to improve the quality and data of amfori audits and boost the transparency, accuracy and reliability of our standard.

  • 4. Protecting human rights – at the centre of everything we do

A central moment of our engagement with EU policy makers was the launch of the human rights due diligence position paper. Similarly, in June 2020, we published our guidance  on State-Imposed Forced Labour (SIFL), to support your due diligence process. We also prepared for the strengthening of the amfori BSCI Code of Conduct and System Manual next year.

  • 5. Fostering more inclusive and diverse approaches

To build a more inclusive approach from members and stakeholders, we reinforced and enlarged our two Advisory Councils – the amfori MAC and amfori SAC.

We are confident that all the above actions have put us in a good position to continue to advance on our joint mission and vision, and effectively contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals despite the challenging times.

Despite any challenges we may face in 2021, we remain committed to supporting you and delivering a superior service.  With this in mind, we have identified a series of key projects and activities and will provide more detailed information in January.
