On 14 May, amfori signed the UN Declaration on Gender Responsive Standards and Standards Development along with 55 other organisations.
At the core of our business, amfori enables businesses to improve their social and environmental performance in global supply chains. Moreover, empowering women working in these supply chains and integrating gender equality in due diligence strategy is key to our mission and values.
Women represent the majority of the workforce in labour intensive export industries and are concentrated in low-paid, low-skilled jobs and, in many countries, granted poor legal protection, as a result making them disproportionately vulnerable to exploitation.
About the Declaration
The purpose of the Declaration is to provide a practical framework for standards bodies that aim to make the standards they develop and the wider standards development industry more gender responsive. All signatories to the Declaration commit to developing a Gender Action Plan that sets out how their standards and their own organization could be made more gender responsive.

amfori is now in the process of producing a framework for its Gender Action Plan, which is foreseen in the coming months. This will be a living document that will be regularly updated with new developments and suggestions from amfori and its stakeholders.
For amfori, this commitment provides an opportunity to further our tools and shape an effective framework to strengthen our work on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, women’s empowerment, as well as programmes and services associated with amfori BSCI and amfori BEPI.
The Action Plan aims to indicate specific actions to be taken with clear metrics and identified resources to achieve these actions. As one of the first and few business associations to sign the declaration we are proud to play a pioneering role on this topic.
