amfori Contributes to First EU City for Fair and Ethical Trade Award

On 27 June 2018, the European Commissioner for Trade, Cecilia Malmström, and Arancha González, Executive Director of the International Trade Centre (ITC), awarded Ghent as a recognition of all the effort and impact made by the city, through fair and ethical trade. With technical support from the ITC and 100,000 Euros in funding from the European Commission, Ghent will embark upon a development project of their choice to improve sustainable trade linkages with a city or region in the global South.

amfori had an important role in creating and presenting the prize: Pierre Gröning, Director Advocacy, was member of the Award jury and Veronica Rubio, Senior Manager – Strategic Programmes, was part of the technical evaluation committee.

The award is a key element of the EU strategy “Trade for all” and contributes to raising awareness about how purchasing decisions of EU municipalities and consumers can affect social, economic and environmental conditions in other countries.
