amfori and the International Organisation for Migration have (IOM) extended our Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which was originally signed in 2017. This agreement strengthens the efforts that amfori has already put toward developing an amfori BSCI Module on Responsible Recruitment. To date, this includes a set of guidelines on responsible recruitment practices and tailored training material.
This MoU provides a long-term framework for further collaboration, until at least 2023. The partnership will take steps to protect migrant workers along supply chains in key sourcing countries for amfori members. In addition, it will include support such as:
- Seeking alignment between the IOM’s International Recruitment Integrity System (IRIS) and the amfori BSCI due diligence approach to enable transparency in the hiring process.
- Exploring the development of trainings on trafficking and modern slavery issues as well as pre-and/or post-orientation training for migrant workers
- Providing members access to a large network of key stakeholders working on the protection of migrant workers and advocacy initiatives with governments
- Explore the development of strategic projects in sourcing counties to address mutual priorities
We began our collaboration with the IOM in 2016 working on forced labour and migration in the food and fisheries industries in Thailand. Our cooperation then continued in building joint training sessions for amfori member companies on issues such as including labour rights, supply chain monitoring and responsible recruitment practices. We have also been proud to collaborate in strategic discussions with our members to address the issue of Syrian refugee workers in Turkish supply chains.
