amfori recently joined the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) administered by the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action as a supporting organisation.
Launched in December 2018, the Charter now brings almost 60 global brands, retailers and suppliers from the fashion industry together with a number of governmental and non-governmental actors, with the aim of aligning the fashion industry with the Paris Agreement to keep global warming to well below 2°C and commit to a target of 30% greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions by 2030.
While the signing of the charter is restricted to companies who commit to the science based targets in the Paris Agreement, business associations, civil society groups and international organisations deemed by the UNFCCC and the signatory are also welcome to join. amfori will be participating in the Charter’s working groups on Decarbonisation and GHG Emission Reductions and Promoting Broader Climate Action.
The goals of the Charter are very much in line with the association’s holistic approach and in particular amfori BEPI which provides a comprehensive range of services that enable member companies to drive focused environmental improvements in their supply chain.
As the realisation of the fashion industry’s significant contribution to environmental degradation grows, amfori is excited to partake in this exercise that helps it and its members redress this formidable challenge.
