On 10 September, amfori’s Greater China Network Representative Yolanda Kwok delivered a presentation during a webinar organised by the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) themed Opportunities for SMEs under the Trend of ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) Development. The event attracted an audience of over two hundred including industrial practitioners, policymakers, SMEs from Hong Kong, and Greater Bay Area in Mainland China.
During her presentation, Yolanda shared amfori’s view on how ESG development would benefit suppliers:
- ESG is increasingly important not only to large companies but also to SMEs. The Fourteenth Five-Year Plan of China sets out the target to achieve peak carbon emission by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060; Germany will enforce the Supply Chain Due Diligence Act in 2023. More regulations relating to ESG are underway and they have both direct and indirect impact on the supply chains including producers and SMEs in Greater China
- amfori encourages SMEs in Greater China to strengthen their knowledge of ESG via its academy where producers can access ESG related capacity building programmes offered online and offline. Joint events and seminar organized by amfori and its partners such as HKPC also offer good networking opportunity for SMEs to learn the best practices from like-minded businesses
- Suppliers should capitalise on the opportunities for ESG development and leverage amfori BSCI and amfori BEPI to demonstrate their performance in ESG and so attract more high-quality international buyers and investors.
Experts from HKPC also shared their views on how SMEs can strengthen their competitiveness through enhancing ESG performance, while Consumer Council, Bank of China (Hong Kong), SME Sustainability Society and Hong Kong SME Development Federation delivered their thoughts on ESG opportunities for SMEs from the perspectives of daily consumption, finance, and practitioners. All parties look forward to further fostering the concept of ESG in the future.
HKPC has been a long-term local partner supporting amfori BEPI’s implementation in Greater China since 2014 by managing a HKSAR Cleaner Production Partnership Programme for factories that are committed to improving their environmental performance. amfori will continue to deepen collaboration with HKPC to support businesses to grow in the evolving trend of ESG development.
