On 29 October, amfori launched its first women’s empowerment training in China. The workshop, Inclusiveness and Diversity: Women Empowerment, was held in Shenzhen, China via a hybrid mode that combined online and offline elements. A representative from UN Women China was invited as a guest speaker and Timeline was the training provider.
The training workshop is part of amfori’s Women Empowerment Programme. As part of the programme, amfori is holding workshops in the three most significant sourcing countries for amfori members: China, India and Bangladesh.
The programme aims to:
- Raise awareness and understanding in companies on the challenges that women face at work as well as on the business benefits of gender equality and women’s empowerment
- Train management to create a more enabling work environment for women
- Increase career prospects for women by training them for positions beyond the factory level
In February, amfori launched Enterprise for Equal, amfori’s Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Strategy: 2020-2022. This document reconfirmed amfori’s commitment to women’s empowerment and set out amfori's plans for promoting gender equality in supply chains and at the workplace.
The Women Empowerment Programme is one of the three building blocks of this strategy. amfori intends to implement this strategy together with global and local partners and our members.
The recently launched WEPs Activator, jointly run by amfori and UN Women, will play a key role in laying the ground for deeper supply chain programs in the future.
Training workshops play a key role in empowering businesses and raising awareness of the benefits of women’s empowerment and are instrumental in achieving our mission of open and sustainable trade.
