amfori Responds to Consultation on Geographic Indication for Non-Agricultural Products

amfori believes that it is important intellectual property rights are protected.  Not only are amfori producer members able to defend their rights against illegitimate (counterfeit) products, but retail members are able to use the system to avoid mistakenly selling counterfeit products.

Agricultural products (such as Champagne and Prosciutto di Parma) have a high degree of reputation and value as they are protected by geographic indications (GIs) – something that is appreciated by consumers.  amfori retail members benefit from such appreciation when they sell such goods.

amfori believes that the same benefits could be achieved if GI protection was extended to non-agricultural products.  Therefore, we have responded to a recent Commission consultation on proposed legislation in this area.
