Annual Report 2019-2020

The global COVID-19 pandemic has cast a solemn shadow over the first half of this year. Amidst this challenge, amfori has published its Annual Report that focusses on how we continue to support businesses to drive environmental, social and trade improvements in their supply chains and contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 

As the leading global business association for open and sustainable trade, amfori has continued to grow stably in 2019-2020, expanding by 6.4%, representing a €1.5 trillion turnover from our members. We welcomed 249 new members over this period. Together, we are 2,414 members from 46 countries around the world, sending the inspiring message that Trade with Purpose can drive the COVID-19 recovery and deliver the SDGs. Geographically, amfori continues to develop its reach. During Summer 2019, amfori opened its first representation in Australia and New Zealand.

While COVID-19 may have curtailed some of our activities since the beginning of 2020, it has not limited our ambition to deliver ever-better services for our members. We supported our members with the amfori COVID-19 Updates Hub. We introduced guidelines on Responsible Purchasing Practices (RPP) to support companies during those difficult times and we joined several  multi-stakeholder initiatives to contribute to shape the post Covid-19 world.  . The COVID-19 Pandemic has not left amfori or member’s activities unaffected, unfortunately. The economic and social shock as led the association to implement a resilience plan to ensure our stability in the future.

In 2019-2020, amfori pivoted its priorities with the adoption of its Three-Year Strategy and Agenda 2024. These approaches will guide our activities as an organisation in terms of strategic priorities and advocacy. At the centre of this thinking is the UN SDGs.  In this Annual Report, we have focussed on the SDGs where amfori contributes most:

  • SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth amfori works to continually improve working conditions for all. Highlights in 2019-2020 include the publication of our work on Living Wage, Responsible Purchasing Practices and Human Rights Due Diligence
  • SDG 5: Gender Equality – amfori published its gender strategy alongside pledging to the UN Women Empowerment Principles. This follows ongoing collaboration with UN Women.
  • SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals amfori engages globally through partnerships. Some notable advances include signing United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s (UNFCCC) Fashion Industry Charter for the Climate Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) Memorandum of Understanding.
  • SDG 12: Responsible Production and Consumption – the flagship amfori BEPI allows members to make improvements to their environmental performance, including the launch of the amfori BEPI Timber Due Diligence Programme. Similarly, the amfori Agenda 2024 aims to engage policy makers in open and sustainable trade.
