The EU launches their EU Climate Pact on Wednesday 16 December. The Pact is described as an EU-wide initiative inviting people, communities and organisations to participate in climate action and build a greener Europe. It will focus on spreading awareness and supporting action on climate change. To start with, the Pact will prioritise actions focused on four themes: green areas, green transport, green buildings and green skills.
amfori participated in the public consultation launched earlier this year that led to the establishment of the Pact. Furthermore, in a subsequent webinar in July 2020, amfori joined the working group to develop ideas on organisational pledges. The working group was tasked to develop a list of climate pledges that can be made by private, public, academic and non-governmental organisations. The pledges should include practical aspects and mechanisms for submitting and monitoring progress.
These actions follow the identification of climate change by amfori as a long-term strategic priority and of environmental due diligence as a key area of focus in 2021. We aim to engage with the Pact as an important part of our advocacy work in this area.
At the launch, discussions will focus on the identification of EU Climate Ambassadors and Climate Pact pledges amongst other topics. Frans Timmermans, Executive Vice President of the European Commission, responsible for the European Green Deal, will attend.
