Event Roundup: The 24th Sino-European CSR Roundtable Forum

On 9 June 2021, amfori and China Sustainability Tribune co-hosted the 24th Sino-European CSR Roundtable Forum. The topic of the Forum was "Carbon neutrality on supply chain management".

The Forum was moderated by Mr. Yu Zhihong, President and Editor-in-chief of the China Sustainability Tribune. Mr. Christian Ewert, former President of amfori joined the Forum virtually from Brussels to deliver the opening and closing remarks. The event was broadcasted live, and 174,000 online viewers joined the event from China and across the globe.

In his opening remark, Christian Ewert emphasised that in order to achieve the common goal of reaching carbon neutrality in 2050 and 2060 respectively set up by the EU and China, all stakeholders particularly businesses will need to operate a systemic shift to a more sustainable economy that works for both people and the planet. He also called for more collaboration between China, the EU, and the US, who altogether account for 40% of the world’s GHG, to join forces and strive together for green recovery and carbon neutrality.

Mr. Peter Handstein, CEO and founder of Hape Group, a leading wooden toy manufacturer and member of amfori since 2017, introduced in his keynote speech, Hape’s sustainability development strategy. Mr. Handstein’s philosophy of “act local & think global” is well manifested in Hape’s DNA and company. Mr. Handstein also recognised the importance of togetherness - working with likeminded partners like amfori is key in the journey to sustainability and to becoming a carbon neutral wooden toy manufacturer.

Mr. Jack Wang, Chief EHS expert of the Guangdong Academy of Corporate Sustainable Development in China highlighted that industries have placed a lot of importance on controlling their emissions in order to achieve carbon neutrality. Mr. Wang also recognised that in recent years a growing number of businesses have adopted amfori BEPI to assist the monitoring of environmental performance in their supply chains and to support continuous improvement efforts.
