On the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the Paris Climate Agreement, amfori participated in the eighth annual High-Level Meeting of Caring for Climate on 8 December. The online high-level event, convened by the UN Global Compact together with the UN Environment Programme and UN Climate Change, was co-hosted with the COP25 and COP26 Climate Champions. The aim was to build momentum towards the virtual Climate Ambition Summit that takes place on 12 December 2020, where we must demonstrate that the world is on a credible path to zero emissions. Initiatives such as “Race to Zero” and “Business Ambition for 1.5°C were discussed.
In the opening session, UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that, “2021 must be the year in which the world leaps forward into a net-zero future.” He called on CEOs to recover soon from COVID-19 in order to lead on climate action and help their governments strengthen their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement in advance of COP26.
This year, amfori adopted climate change as a long-term strategic priority and identified environmental due diligence as a major area of work for 2021. To this end, amfori foresees a vibrant dialogue with members and stakeholders in the months ahead on advancing on climate change goals in line with schemes such as the abovementioned Business Ambition for 1.5°C, which was discussed at the event.
The Business Ambition for 1.5°C is an urgent call to action from a global coalition of UN agencies and business and industry leaders to set ambitious, science-based emissions reduction targets. So far over 300 companies have responded to the open letter from global leaders and signed the Business Ambition for 1.5°C commitment.
Further work by amfori is planned to monitor and engage on select NDCs ahead of COP26.
