On 21 January, BSCI received a report from Finnwatch - a Finnish research organisation on corporate responsibility issues. This report underlines the poor working conditions at two Thai producers of tuna and a major Thai producer of pineapple concentrate. BSCI welcomes reports which highlight the challenge of companies to source from socially compliant producers. Thanks to the BSCI monitoring system, concerned BSCI Participants have been aware that these the two producers of Tuna were assessed as ‘non-compliant’ in BSCI audits, notably with regard to working hours and overtime, compensation and health and safety.
The Thai pineapple producer is an ‘orphan’ in the BSCI database; this means they currently have no direct business relations with any BSCI participating company according to the BSCI database. The heart of BSCI’s philosophy is the step-by-step development approach, which supports a long-term improvement of the producer. In this respect, BSCI Participants sourcing from the two mentioned producers will monitor true implementation of corrective actions. BSCI supports producers by offering them training programs on the implementation of good working conditions; these highlight the importance of open dialogue between management and workers. Out of the 51 food producers that BSCI Participants are working with in Thailand, BSCI trained over 20 producers in 2012 and will continue to do so in 2013 through the organisation of training sessions on Management practices on 5 March 2013 and Occupational Health and Safety on 5 November 2013. BSCI will also continue to cooperate with the local government, trade associations, trade unions and local NGOs who also have an important role to play. Through a Stakeholder Round Table in Thailand supported by BSCI, BSCI will address notably the situation of migrant workers at a political level. It is with the ongoing commitment of all stakeholders that improvements can be experienced with regard to working conditions in factories and farms worldwide.
