FTA calls to lift trade barriers Between EU and Burma without delay

The FTA has welcomed the EU Commission proposal to restore Burma to preferential trade treatment following significant progress in the country's political reforms. The FTA believes that this proposal is a logical and important measure to continue supporting the efforts made by Burma which have been officially recognised by the ILO. The FTA fully supports this decision and demands immediate approval from the European Parliament.

Preferential market access for Burma into the EU is fundamental to improve the living conditions of the Burmese people and to re-integrate this country into the world economy. However, the FTA emphasises that the European Parliament should not apply more stringent labour standards to Burma than other least developed countries.
