The Foreign Trade Association (FTA) warmly congratulates Jean-Claude Juncker on his election as the new president of the European Commission, the first being designed according to the provisions of the Lisbon Treaty.
As Europe’s premier association for free trade and global supply chains representing over 1.300 European retailers, importers and brand companies, FTA is aware of the crucial challenges laying ahead for the next five years, with special regard to the European free trade regime. EU trade policy is at a crossroads and it is of outmost importance to keep supporting the right framework conditions for facilitating the exchange of goods at both the European and global level.
FTA is confident that Mr Juncker’s extensive experience in previous leading positions as Prime Minister of Luxembourg and President of the Eurogroup will be key to making the right policy choices to bring Europe back to the path of growth and enhanced competiveness. The distribution sector welcomes his enthusiastic speech at the European Parliament on 15 July which made a strong reference to the importance of concluding a comprehensive trade agreement with the US.
FTA wishes Mr Juncker a successful term ahead and looks forward to working with him and the European Commission towards a free trade agenda.
