FTA joins EU Mission for Growth in South East Asia

From the 12th to the 16th November, four FTA representatives participated in the EU delegation visiting Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand that was organised in the framework of the European Commission’s 'Missions for Growth', an initiative that aims at strengthening links with local businesses and raising awareness on trade obstacles in these countries.

FTA Board members Herman Poelmann (Pole Group) and Michael Wiedmann (Metro Group), as well as Mireille Van der Sprong (Etam Group) and Pierre Groning, FTA Trade Policy Advisor, joined a group of 110 European business members led by Commissioner Antonio Tajani, responsible for Industry and Entrepreneurship.

In addition to political meetings with high-ranking dignitaries, such as the Vietnamese Prime Minister, Nguyen Tan Dung; the Burmese President, U Thein Sein; and the Thai Deputy Prime Minister, Niwattumrong Boonsongpaisan, the delegation also took part in a series of business match-making events.

During the visit, specific attention was put on Myanmar and its untapped potential as a sourcing and investment market. Burmese leaders invited participants to seize the opportunity and establish business relationships with local companies on the basis of sustainable investments and long term engagement along the principle of human development. Given the interest generated, the FTA will closely follow any business developments and will take it into account for future activities on the country's business profile.
