The FTA believes that a closer EU-Japan trade relations could provide great opportunities for both parties. Today, Japan is still a difficult place to do retail and wholesale business and to export to. At the same time, trade obstacles at the border and within the EU still hamper Japanese imports to enter Europe. For this reason, FTA is closely observing the talks for a free trade agreement with Japan and are committed to play a constructive and engaged role in the negotiation process. Against this background, the FTA developed a Position Paper to highlight that more can be done to improve conditions for mutual trade. More specifically, the document draws a general picture of the bilateral trade relations, lists a significant number of trade barriers, and proposes practical solutions to overcome the challenges.
