FTA Members’ Day and Sustainability Conference Prepare Companies For Ambitious Future Challenges

On 1 and 2 June 2016, FTA hosted its very first Members’ Day and Sustainability Conference under the theme ‘The Power of Collaboration’ in Brussels, Belgium. Together with more than 250 leaders and practitioners in business, sustainability and civil society, FTA embraced its journey towards a world of international trade and sustainable supply chains.

On 1 June, FTA members from the trade and sustainability world joined forces to address the future challenges facing businesses. With increasing debates around protectionism, companies are also faced by augmenting sustainability pressures. The intensifying link between international trade and sustainability was raised during a welcome interview between Christian Ewert, FTA Director General and John Morrison, the Executive Director of the Institute of Human Rights and Business.

Mr. Ewert highlighted that “international trade cannot happen at any cost. And the production and trading of the goods we consume cannot be at the cost of neglected conditions of human beings nor at the condition of a polluted natural ecosystem. International trade should be done with purpose”.

Around 100 key international stakeholders joined FTA members on 2 June to explore the current and future sustainability challenges for companies. Two high-level plenary sessions welcomed bold and recognised thought leaders to explore the sustainable business model of the future and the intertwined challenge between climate change and human rights. Our influential speakers brought varied perspectives on the role of businesses and what can, and needs, to be done to achieve a sustainable world.

The two days featured 17 breakout sessions, five high-level keynote speakers, along with many interactive challenges for the audience. Following the theme of ‘The Power of Collaboration’ our participants engaged in hands-on breakout sessions, spontaneous interventions during plenary sessions, and ample networking activities such as speed networking and collective puzzle-solving.

FTA already looks forward to welcoming its guests to its FTA Members’ Day and Sustainability Conference 2017, when the association will celebrate its 40-year anniversary.
