Jan Eggert, Director General of the Foreign Trade Association (FTA):
"FTA would like to show its full support to Cecilia Malmström, European Commissioner-designate for Trade, ahead of the hearing with the Committee on International Trade (INTA) at the European Parliament today.
Mrs. Malmström will take over a portfolio that is a cornerstone in promoting the EU's economic recovery and which currently has many open fronts. The completion of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership with the United States (TTIP), the post-Bali work programme and the various bilateral and regional negotiations, underway or to be launched, will be main priorities for the next political term. For these challenges to be successfully accomplished, a strong trade agenda facilitating international commerce and a revamp of the EU trade law will be required.
FTA is confident that Mrs. Malmström is a competent candidate for fulfilling this position. Her impressive experience, gained in a large number of key roles, notably as Commissioner for home affairs, and her support to the values of free trade and open markets will contribute to a positive assessment of her competences by the European Parliament and to a successful five-year mandate"
