FTA and EuroCommerce jointly organised a panel at the WTO Public Forum in Geneva on 3 October 2014. The well-attended session gathered 70 participants to discuss the topic "Global Value Chains: What Economic Footprint in Sourcing Countries?". The high-ranking panel was composed of the Vietnamese Ambassador to the WTO, Nguyen Trung Thanh, the WTO economist Christian Henn, Professor Joerg Hofstetter, author of the BSCI Achievement Study, and Martina Lodrant from the European Commission.
The panel succeeded in demonstrating the many benefits for a developing country in producing consumer goods for Western markets. Speakers stressed that economic and social gains are not concentrated on the side of the companies from the industrialised world but cover all steps of the supply chain, including the extraction of raw material and product assembly.
In the margins of the Public Forum, FTA met with an important number of trade policy-makers, also with the objective to create new dynamics around the stalled negotiations for the ratification of the Trade Facilitation Agreement.
