In late November, amfori participated in the Bangladesh Leather-footwear & Leather-goods International Sourcing Show held in Dhaka. This event was co-organised by the Leather goods and Footwear Manufacturers & Exporters Association of Bangladesh and the Ministry of Commerce Bangladesh.
amfori President Christian Ewert moderated a panel with representatives from Bangladeshi government, academia, and industry.
During the panel discussion, he explained that the leather sector has a tremendous potential to grow and increase its own usage of raw material from currently 30% to over 50% in the near future. Significant investments from abroad indicate that the leather could be the second largest export sector.
Mr Ewert stressed the importance of Bangladesh as a top sourcing country for amfori members, especially regarding the garment business and growing leather sector. Moreover, more than half of the garment factories in Bangladesh are registered in the amfori BSCI Platform as sourcing factories.
Since 2011, amfori has appointed a local representative in Dhaka and expanded its team to provide support for members and their producers on the ground through networking meetings and training opportunities.
