Promoting EU-China Cooperation on Trade and Sustainable Development Goals

In cooperation with the College of Europe and the Chinese Chamber of International Commerce, amfori hosted a conference on 7 May 2018 at the European Economic and Social Committee in Brussels on EU-China Cooperation on United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the role of trade and investment in achieving them.

The event included the European Commission Vice President Jyrki Katainen and the Ambassador of China to the EU, H.E. Zhang Ming as keynote speakers, and attracted over 100 participants from various organisations from academia and government to business.

Vice President Katainen complimented amfori for our work on promoting SDGs in various parts of the world.

“The European private sector and investors play a key role in promoting the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainability and the SDGs, including with China,” said Vice President Katainen.

Both speakers outlined current aspects of EU-China cooperation on trade and sustainable development, and the potential for future collaboration, such as on projects arising from the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative. amfori Director General, Mr Christian Ewert, spoke about the role that our members play in promoting both social and environmental sustainability in China and globally.

Building on our Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the China Federation of Industrial Economics (CFIE), this event demonstrates a strong interest in trade affairs and sustainability and provided us with greater encouragement to continue our work in both Europe and China.
