Reflections on Global Goals Week

Global Goals Week is an annual week of action to raise awareness and hold leaders to account in order to accelerate progress to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

As an initial step in supporting our members in understanding how they contribute to the success of the global goals, amfori recently released a Technical Paper and a Statement, outlining how our services, tools, and activities align with the SDGs.

Stakeholder events

For the first time, amfori took part in the UN’s annual SDG Business Forum organised in parallel to the UN General Assembly on 25 September in New York. Business, government, and civil society leaders expressed the urgent need to step up efforts to succeed in the implementation of these targets by 2030.

In his closing remarks, Pol Polman, former CEO of Unilever concluded that the costs of inaction are becoming each day higher than the cost of actually implementing the SDGs. He encouraged all businesses to show real leadership by bringing humanity into business.

amfori was also present at a Belgian SDG multi-stakeholder event co-organised by the UN Global Compact local chapter, The Shift, which amfori joined this year.

The main conclusions of this Belgian SDG Forum include:

  • the request for a minimum basis for due diligence legislation across all sectors at the European level to create an equal level playing field.
  • That more opportunities lie with SMEs to integrate SDGs into their company practices such as materiality assessments linking to the goals.

Next steps

amfori is looking forward to future engagement in these networks at the national and global levels to continue the alignment of our work and mission with the SDGs.

More practical support for members will be ready soon, stay tuned!
