The fifth session of the Unleash Opportunity series Responsible Purchasing Practices: A cornerstone of HRDD, took place on 30 September 2021.
Participants learned about the stipulations on responsible purchasing practices in the new amfori BSCI Code of Conduct that amfori members commit to adhere to when becoming a member of amfori BSCI.
Dr. Liang Xiaohui, Chief Researcher & Deputy Director at CNTAC, gave insights into the producers’ perspective on purchasing practices and outlined key recommendations from the Sustainable Terms of Trade Initiative. He stressed the importance of commercial compliance and encouraged amfori to continue fostering dialogue between buyers and suppliers and raise awareness among buyers.
Annette Koch, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at GERRY WEBER International AG provided insights into the buyers’ perspective and stressed the importance of close collaboration and communication with their business partners to build trust and overcome common challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. She called for an aligned approach and joint commitment to purchasing practices.
Marsha Dickson, President and Co-Founder at Better Buying Institute, outlined the benefits of responsible purchasing practices, such as improving customer relations, strengthening risk visibility, meeting business and ESG goals, improving product quality, amongst many others.
Marsha concluded by emphasizing the importance of improving purchasing practices and strengthening supplier relationships to foster supply chain resilience, business continuity and strengthening social and environmental standards, especially in time of crisis, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
