World Water Day 2017 Puts Spotlight on Wastewater

March 22 marks the World Water Day, an annual day organised by the United Nations to focus attention and raise awareness of the increasingly dire state of our global water resources. This year’s theme is wastewater – an important source of pollution, but also a valuable resource, if managed safely.

Did you know that…*

  • Industrial water consumption is responsible for 22% of global water use?
  • Globally, over 80% of wastewater generated flows back into the ecosystem without being treated or reused?
  • By 2030, global demand for water is expected to grow by 50%?

The world is facing an interesting contrast, with a growing demand for water coupled with increasing wastewater production with a higher-than-ever pollution load.

A recent report published by the UN on the occasion of World Water Day highlights the enormous opportunities that arise from exploiting wastewater as a resource. Safely managed wastewater is an affordable and sustainable source of water, energy, nutrients and other recoverable materials with the costs of investing in new technology being greatly outweighed by the benefits to human health, economic development and environmental sustainability.

FTA’s Business Environmental Performance Initiative (BEPI) already supports businesses in managing wastewater as one of the key supply chain environmental performance areas and joins this celebration to raise awareness about the possibilities of reusing this valuable resource and contribute towards the achievement of UN Sustainable Development Goal six on clean water and sanitation.
